This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Abetone webcam?

The webcam is not in the village of Abetone, at the pass, but in Val di Luce, one of the valleys of the ski area: it stands at 1,650 m, on the terrace of a mountain hut beside the pistes, and looks east. In the foreground is the mid-station of the Passo d'Annibale chairlift, with its red platform and pylons; opposite are the pistes running down through the woods and Monte Gomito (1,892 m), with the top station of the lifts on its summit. A strip along the bottom shows the current weather readings.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Abetone and how do I get there?

Abetone is a pass at 1,388 m in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, in the province of Pistoia, on the border with Emilia: you drive up on the SS12 road, about 50 km from Pistoia, 90 from Florence and 85 from Modena. Val di Luce is about 8 km by road from the pass: you leave the main road at Faidello, on the Emilian side, and climb for 5 km to the lifts.

Discover Abetone

Val di Luce is not the village of Abetone: the village is at the pass, at 1,388 metres, while the valley lies on the other side of Monte Gomito, about 8 kilometres away by road. At the bottom is a small cluster of hotels and holiday apartments, where the chairlifts start. The camera is higher up, at 1,650 metres, halfway down the piste from the Passo d'Annibale.

Until the 1930s only woodcutters and shepherds came up here. Then the engineer Lapo Farinati, the first podestà (mayor) of Abetone, bought a large part of the valley to turn it into a resort, with a large hotel, pistes and lifts. The war stopped the work: what remains of the project is the stone hotel below the Passo d'Annibale, now the Le Terrazze hut, the one the camera looks out from. Pistes and chairlifts came only after the war.

The Passo d'Annibale, at almost 1,800 metres, owes its name to a tradition: Hannibal's Carthaginian army is said to have crossed here in 217 BC, though not all historians agree. At the head of the valley is the Alpe Tre Potenze (1,940 m), which marked the border between three states: the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Modena and the Duchy of Lucca.

The Monte Gomito chairlift links the valley to the rest of the Abetone pistes, about 50 kilometres in all. Before you set off, the picture shows whether there is snow, fog or wind up high. See the other Apennine webcams, Monte Cimone and Sestola on the Emilian side, the ski slopes or the map.

Did you know?

Val di Luce, the “valley of light”, used to be called Valle delle Pozze, after its small ponds. Today's name comes from a 1930s project by the engineer Lapo Farinati, which included a great lighthouse high up, never built, to light the valley.
