This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Val Gerola webcam at Pescegallo?

The camera is above Pescegallo, at the head of Val Gerola, in the Salmurano basin where the chairlift arrives, at about 1,850 m, and looks at the Salmurano pistes: the grassy slope with the pylons of the drag lift, a gravel service track, the gully of a stream and, behind, the rocky peaks around the Salmurano Pass. It lets you see whether there is snow on the pistes before you drive up from Morbegno.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Pescegallo, in Val Gerola, and how do I get there?

Pescegallo is a hamlet of Gerola Alta, in the province of Sondrio, at the head of Val Gerola, at about 1,450 m. By car you drive up from Morbegno on the Val Gerola road (provincial road 7), about 19 km by way of Rasura, Pedesina and Gerola Alta; the train goes as far as Morbegno. From the village the chairlift goes up to the pistes when it is running.

Discover Val Gerola (Pescegallo)

Pescegallo is the last settlement in Val Gerola: a small holiday village at about 1,450 metres, made up of chalets and small apartment buildings in wood and stone, where the road up from Morbegno ends. Before it was built, the last village in the valley was Fenile, a little over two kilometres down the road.

From the square at Pescegallo the chairlift goes up to the Salmurano hut, at 1,850 metres, on the shelf where the camera stands. The drag lift you see in the picture climbs to almost 2,000 metres, below the Bocchetta di Salmurano, from where a path goes down into Val Brembana; beside it run the two Salmurano pistes, easy and about 800 metres long. It is a small ski area, with about a dozen kilometres of pistes and, at the chairlift base, a beginners' area with a magic carpet. In summer you can walk from the square to Lake Pescegallo, at 1,865 metres: a natural lake, closed by a dam after the Second World War.

This is the valley of the Bitto, the stream that gives its name to the PDO cheese. Gerola takes its own from "gera", the gravel brought down by the stream; a document mentions it in 1238, and by 1321 it was already a municipality in its own right. Under the Visconti, Milan used the iron from its mines to make weapons. The carriage road from Morbegno arrived only in the first decade of the 20th century. At the head of the valley Pizzo dei Tre Signori, 2,554 metres, marked the border between three states: Milan, Venice and the Three Leagues of Graubünden. Did you know?

Pescegallo has nothing to do with fish ("pesce" in Italian): the name joins "pesc", the dialect word for fir, and the capercaillie ("gallo cedrone"). It means "the capercaillie's fir".
