Where is Trivigno and how do I get there?
Trivigno is a locality in the municipality of Tirano, in Valtellina: a basin of meadows at about 1,700 m in the mountains between Tirano and Aprica. You reach it by car on a surfaced road: it is about 16 km from Tirano; you drive up from Stazzona, or from Aprica by way of Pian di Gembro, a dozen kilometres.
Discover Trivigno
Trivigno is a plateau of meadows and woods in the mountains south-east of Tirano, within its municipality. The locality lies at about 1,700 metres; the local weather station is at 1,773. Around it grow spruce, pine and larch, and beyond the meadows rises Monte Padrio, 2,152 metres, between Valtellina and Val Camonica.
In summer it is a place for easy walks and mountain biking. The path to Monte Padrio climbs among rhododendrons, and from the top the view turns through 360 degrees, from the Bernina to the Adamello. The mountain is shared by the municipalities of Tirano and Corteno Golgi. The surfaced road then continues to the Passo della Foppa, the Mortirolo, at 1,852 metres.
In winter Monte Padrio is climbed on touring skis, and the plateau is good for walks in the snow. There is also a cross-country track, with a 7-kilometre loop and two shorter ones of 4.5 and 2.5 kilometres, but it has not been groomed in recent winters: check before you set off with cross-country skis.
If you are driving up from Tirano or Aprica, look at the picture first: it shows whether the meadows are green or white and what the sky is like over Monte Padrio. See also the Valtellina webcams, Tirano, Aprica and the map.
Did you know?
The little church at Trivigno is dedicated to San Gaetano (St Cajetan) and bears the date 1706 on its façade: by tradition, on 7 August a procession used to climb from Tirano along the old mule track.
