Is Passo d'Eira open?
Yes: the Eira, like the Foscagno, is open all year because it is part of the only Italian road to Livigno. In winter snow chains on board or winter tyres are compulsory; short closures are possible during the heaviest snowfalls.

Trepalle is a hamlet of Livigno at over 2,000 metres, between the Foscagno and the Eira: it is the highest permanently inhabited hamlet in Italy, and its church of Sant'Anna, at 2,069 metres, is the highest parish in Europe.

Discover Eira Pass
Passo d'Eira is a broad, grassy saddle on the ridge that closes the Livigno valley to the east, between Mottolino to the south and Monte Crapene to the north. The SS 301 crosses it at 2,208 metres: it is a 6.7-kilometre climb from Livigno and 2.9 from the valley floor at Trepalle. Around the pass there are mountain huts, hotels and the highest houses in the hamlet.
At the top stands a small chapel with no bell tower, dedicated to the Madonna della Pace, Our Lady of Peace. It was built in 1924 to fulfil a vow made during the First World War for the return of the soldiers and prisoners of Livigno and Trepalle, and was restored in 2010. Travellers on foot or by horse-drawn sleigh would stop here to pray before going on.
In winter the Eira catches out drivers coming up from Bormio: once over the Foscagno the road drops to Trepalle and then climbs again, and anyone who took their chains off too soon finds out here. The cold is Trepalle's, where the thermometer read 41 degrees below zero in February 1956. From the saddle the lifts head up towards Mottolino and Monte della Neve, at 2,785 metres, and skiers stop in the sun at the huts on the pass.
In spring and summer the pass is a base for altitude training, especially for cyclists. In 2024 the Giro d'Italia came through here in the finale of the Livigno stage: from the Eira a side road of 1.8 kilometres, with ramps of up to 19 per cent, led to the finish at Mottolino, at 2,385 metres, where Tadej Pogačar won. Did you know?
In the summer of 1948 Giovannino Guareschi came up to Trepalle and met the parish priest, Don Alessandro Parenti: the story 'Trebilie', published in Candido that October, came out of it, and the priest left traces in his Don Camillo too.
