Where is Scuol and how do I get there?
Scuol is in the Lower Engadin, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, at 1,243 m. By train it is the terminus of the Rhaetian Railway (Scuol-Tarasp station). By car you arrive from the Upper Engadin along the valley, from Klosters on the Vereina tunnel shuttle train, or from Austria and South Tyrol over the Reschen Pass.
Discover Scuol
Since 2015 Scuol has been the largest municipality in Switzerland by area: merging with Ardez, Ftan, Guarda, Sent and Tarasp took it to about 439 square kilometres, with around 4,600 inhabitants. It is also the largest Romansh-speaking municipality in Graubünden. The village, on the left bank of the Inn, has two parts: Scuol Sura, the upper one, and Scuol Sot, the lower.
Scuol's mineral springs are first mentioned in 1369, but their large-scale use began around 1860 and turned the village into a spa resort; until 1943 its official name was the German one, Schuls. In the centre, five fountains have two spouts: spring water runs from one, naturally sparkling mineral water from the other. Since 1993 the village's baths have been the Bogn Engiadina.
Above the village is the Motta Naluns ski area, reached by a gondola lift as early as 1956: today twelve lifts and pistes from 1,250 to 2,785 metres, with a run that goes all the way down to Sent. Scuol lies about 570 metres lower than St. Moritz: between the rooftops on the valley floor and the peaks above three thousand metres, the picture shows at what altitude the snow begins.
