How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Prato allo Stelvio webcam?
The webcam is on a roof at the edge of Prato allo Stelvio, at about 915 m, and takes in a wide panorama: on the left the floor of Val Venosta towards Oris and Lasa, in the centre the village roofs below the Croda di Cengles (Tschenglser Hochwand, 3,375 m), on the right the bell tower of Agumes and the mountains above Glorenza and Malles. It is useful for checking the weather in the valley before driving up to the Stelvio.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Prato allo Stelvio and how do I get there?
Prato allo Stelvio (Prad am Stilfserjoch) is in Val Venosta (Vinschgau), South Tyrol, at 915 m, where the Solda valley opens onto the floor of the Adige valley. By car you arrive from Merano on the SS 38 Stelvio state road, which runs through the village; the nearest railway station is Spondigna, on the Merano-Malles line. The road to the Stelvio Pass starts here; in winter it is closed above Trafoi.
Discover Prato allo Stelvio
At Prato the Solda valley opens into Val Venosta: the Solda stream runs through the village and a little further down, opposite Spondigna, joins the Adige. The village lies at 915 metres, on the right-hand side of the valley. Its name does not come from the pass: it appears as Prada in 1187 and goes back to the Latin prata, meadows.
The Stelvio road on the South Tyrol side begins here: it passes through Gomagoi and Trafoi and reaches 2,758 metres. In winter it is closed above Trafoi; it is usually open from late May to early November, with dates set each year, and on this side they are decided by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. At Gomagoi the road to Solda branches off, where there is skiing in winter.
In the centre is aquaprad, the visitor centre of the Stelvio National Park devoted to water, with aquariums of the fish that live in South Tyrol's streams, rivers and lakes. Below the village the Solda stream forms a sandy delta, the Prader Sand: a protected habitat, rich in birds. The camera looks out from the edge of the village: in the centre of the picture the Croda di Cengles, 3,375 metres, is the highest point in the municipality.
