Where is Semogo and how do I get there?

Semogo is a hamlet of Valdidentro, in upper Valtellina (province of Sondrio), halfway between Bormio and Livigno. You get there by car from Bormio along the SS 301 state road, which continues to the Foscagno Pass and Livigno.

Discover Semogo

Semogo lies at 1,420 metres in Valdidentro, on the state road that climbs to the Foscagno Pass and Livigno: from here to the pass, at 2,291 metres, there are still almost 900 metres to climb. Before 1914 that road did not exist, and only a mule track ran between the village and Livigno. Today it crosses the pass between Valdidentro and Trepalle.

Semogo has a church of San Carlo, also dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Roch and born of a vow: in 1636 the villagers promised it to stop the plague that was spreading through the Bormio area. Work began around 1640 and lasted some twenty years; the onion-domed bell tower dates from 1675. The parish church, Sant'Abbondio, is recorded from 1328, and Semogo has been a parish since 1624, when it split from Pedenosso.

Higher up on the same road, the hairpin at Arnoga is the way into Val Viola: 8.5 kilometres and about 440 metres of climbing to the Rifugio Viola, at about 2,300 metres, just below the pass that marks the Swiss border and leads towards Poschiavo. In winter the Semogo image is for anyone driving to Livigno: it shows whether the snow has reached 1,400 metres, before the higher stretches. The name Semogo seems to come from 'semos jugo', halfway up the mountain: the village does sit on the sunny side of Monte Plator. Its patron is Saint Abundius, and on 15 August it holds the Festa del Bosco.
