This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Como webcam?

The webcam is on the Brunate hill above Como, at about 500 m, and looks north: the first basin of Lake Como, with Cernobbio on the shore opposite and its houses climbing the slope of Monte Bisbino (1,325 m), Moltrasio further on and, on the right, the Blevio shore. The centre of Como is not in the picture: it lies further south, at the foot of the hill.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Como and how do I get there?

Como is in Lombardy, at the end of the south-western branch of the lake, about 50 km north of Milan: you get there on the A9 motorway or by train, to Como San Giovanni or Como Lago station. From the lakefront the funicular climbs to Brunate in seven minutes; the camera is on the same hill, lower down than the village.

Discover Como

Brunate is the village above Como, at 715 metres, on the south-western corner of the Larian Triangle. It is known as the “balcony over the Alps”: on clear days its viewpoints take in the plain as far as the skyscrapers of Milan and the western arc of the Alps, with Monte Rosa. Until 1817, when a mule track was completed, getting up from Como was hard work.

The turning point was the funicular, opened on 11 November 1894, which leaves from Piazza De Gasperi on the lakefront. Eclectic and Art Nouveau villas went up on the slope and, in 1927, on top of Monte Tre Croci, the Volta Lighthouse: an octagonal tower 29 metres high, Como's tribute to Alessandro Volta on the centenary of his death. At night it sends out a green, white and red light.

On the shore opposite, in Cernobbio, stands Villa d'Este: built in the sixteenth century for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, it has been a hotel since 1873, with a park of 10 hectares. From Cernobbio a narrow, winding road climbs to the summit of Monte Bisbino, right by the Swiss border. The first basin is also where the seaplanes of the Como flying club, founded in 1930, take off.
