This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Flüela Pass webcam?
It is a 360° panorama from Chant Sura, at 2,190 m, on the Engadin side of the pass, about 2.5 km east of the summit (2,383 m) as the crow flies. You see the road, towards the summit and towards Susch, the Susasca stream and the entrance to Val Grialetsch. The hospice and the small lakes at the summit are not in view.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is the Flüela Pass and how do I get there?
The Flüela Pass (2,383 m) is in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, between Davos and Susch in the Lower Engadin: about 26 km of road. It is normally closed in winter, from early January until late April or May; the canton of Graubünden decides on closing and reopening, depending on snow and avalanche danger. All year round cars can cross on the Vereina shuttle train, between Klosters Selfranga and Sagliains.
Discover Flüela Pass
The camera is not on the summit: it stands lower down, at Chant Sura, at 2,190 metres in Val Susasca, the valley that runs from the pass down to Susch and the Engadin. The summit, at 2,383 metres, is about 2.5 kilometres further west as the crow flies. Anyone driving up from the Engadin can see here whether the road is clear and how far down the snow reaches, before the last few kilometres.
The carriage road was built in 1866 and 1867. The pass lies between the Schwarzhorn and the Flüela Wisshorn, two peaks over three thousand metres, where the Albula Alps give way to the Silvretta. At the top are the hospice and two small lakes, the Schottensee and the Schwarzsee: summit and hospice lie in the municipality of Zernez. In summer the PostBus runs over the road between Davos and the Engadin.
Since the Vereina railway line opened in 1999, the pass has no longer been kept open all winter: the road crosses slopes exposed to avalanches. From Chant Sura a marked path leads down into Val Grialetsch, towards the Swiss Alpine Club's Grialetsch hut, at 2,542 metres. Explore the other Engadin webcams, Zernez, Ardez, Scuol or the map.
Did you know?
The stream beside the road is the Susasca: it runs to the Inn, then the Danube and the Black Sea. Beyond the pass the water flows instead towards the Rhine and the North Sea: Europe's main watershed crosses the Flüela.
