At a glance
- Stelvio Pass (2,758 m)
- Closed in winter: usually open from late May to early November, with dates set each year and earlier closures if it snows.
- Stelvio, glacier slopes (2,758 to 3,450 m)
- Summer skiing above the pass: usually from late May to early November, in other words while the road is open.
- Bernina Pass (2,328 m)
- Usually open all year between Poschiavo and the Engadine; short closures are possible during the heaviest snowfalls.
- Foscagno Pass (2,291 m)

- Open all year like the Foscagno, on the same main road: it is the last pass before Livigno.
- Ofen Pass (Passo del Forno, 2,149 m)
- Usually open all year between Zernez and Val Müstair; the webcam is not on the pass: it looks at the peaks from Minschuns, at about 2,400 m, not at the road.

- Closed in winter: usually open from the first week of June to the last Friday of November, between Livigno and Valposchiavo.
- Maloja Pass (1,815 m)

Good to know
Between Valtellina and Graubünden the passes fall into two groups. Usually open all year are the Foscagno and the Eira, on the Italian road to Livigno, and on the Swiss side the Bernina, the Maloja and the Ofen. Closed by snow are the Stelvio, the Gavia, the Umbrail and the Forcola di Livigno. The webcams on this page show what the weather is doing up high, with the time of the shot: they show snow and visibility, they do not certify that the road is open.
Opening is decided by whoever runs the road. In Italy the Stelvio on the Bormio side, the Gavia, the Foscagno and the Eira are state roads managed by ANAS; the South Tyrol side of the Stelvio comes under the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. In Switzerland it is the Canton of Graubünden: its civil engineering office (Tiefbauamt) publishes road conditions, and for the Forcola the cantonal government has set the calendar, reopening on the first Monday of June and closing on the last Friday of November, with delays or earlier closures when there is avalanche danger. The dates of the other seasonal passes change every year with the snow: that is why you find the rule here, not the day.
A few practical rules. Three roads climb to the Stelvio, from Bormio, from Prato allo Stelvio and from the Umbrail: all three open only in the warm season. When the Forcola is closed, the Munt la Schera tunnel remains the way from Livigno to Switzerland. On the Foscagno road winter tyres or snow chains on board are compulsory in winter; in Switzerland chains are compulsory only where the signs say so, but you need winter equipment all the same. Is the Stelvio Pass open today?
The Stelvio (2,758 m) closes every winter: it is usually open from late May to early November, with dates set each year and earlier closures if it snows. The webcam at the pass shows the situation at the top; the official opening is announced by ANAS and, for the South Tyrol side, by the Province of Bolzano.
Is the Bernina Pass open in winter?
Usually yes: the Bernina (2,328 m) is kept open all year by snow clearing, and may close briefly during the heaviest snowfalls. In the cold season you need winter equipment; road conditions are published by the civil engineering office of the Canton of Graubünden.
Is the Foscagno Pass open in winter?
Yes: the Foscagno (2,291 m) and the Eira (2,208 m) are open all year, because they are the Italian road to Livigno. In winter you need winter tyres or snow chains on board, and temporary closures are possible in the heaviest snowfalls.
When does the Forcola di Livigno open?
Usually in the first week of June, and it closes on the last Friday of November: the Canton of Graubünden sets a winter closure of at least six months, longer if there is avalanche danger. While it is closed, the Munt la Schera tunnel remains the link between Livigno and Switzerland.
Which passes close in winter between Valtellina and the Engadine?
The Stelvio, the Gavia, the Umbrail and the Forcola di Livigno, as well as the Mortirolo and the Albula. Usually open all year are the Foscagno, the Eira, the Aprica, the Bernina, the Maloja, the Ofen and the Julier.
