This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can you see from the Grosotto webcam?

A small lake in a park on the valley floor, in Grosotto, at 605 metres in the middle Valtellina; the sanctuary is not in the frame. Use it for the weather between Tirano and Bormio.

Why is the Grosotto sanctuary famous?

It grew out of a vow made in 1487, when the inhabitants asked the Madonna to spare them from the invasion by Graubünden troops. The present building dates from the early 17th century and holds an 18th-century organ in a carved case, and frescoes in the side chapels.

What is the weather like in Grosotto now?

The webcam shows it, with the time of the snapshot. At about 600 metres the climate is that of the valley floor, milder than in the upper valley.

Are Grosio and Grosotto the same village?

No: they are two neighbouring municipalities. Between the two villages is the Dosso dei Castelli with the Rupe Magna. Valtline has a webcam in each.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Discover Grosio

Grosotto lies at 605 metres on the floor of the Adda valley, at the point where the Roasco, the stream of Val Grosina, flows into the river. The Prati di Punta park has small artificial lakes, play areas and sports fields, and it is reached by the Sentiero Valtellina, the cycle and foot path that follows the Adda for 114 kilometres from Colico to Bormio: from Tirano it heads up the valley, keeping close to the river.

On 16 October 1910 the Grosotto power station began producing energy for Milan: it was the first hydroelectric plant of the city's municipal electricity company, founded that same year. The current travelled 150 kilometres along a 65-kilovolt line, designed by the engineer Giacinto Motta, to the receiving station in Piazza Trento. At the time it was among the longest and most advanced power lines in the world.

The old centre follows Via Patrioti: the parish house with its carved portal, the pillory column and Casa Stoppani with its fountain and wash-house. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Eusebius. In winter a glance at the small lake is enough to tell whether the snow has come down to the valley floor. See also the Valtellina webcams, the Grosio webcams, Grosio village, Tirano and the map.
