This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can you see from the Silvaplana webcam?
The camera is at Murtèl, the middle station of the Corvatsch cable car, at about 2,700 metres, and looks down into the valley: Lake Silvaplana with the village on its shore, at about 1,815 metres, and opposite the mountains on the other side of the Engadin. The cable car's ropes cross the picture. Use it to get an idea of weather and snow before you set off.
When does the Maloja wind blow at Silvaplana?
On sunny days in the summer months, usually from June to September: the thermal breeze from the south-west arrives shortly before midday and drops in the late afternoon.
Can you kitesurf on Lake Silvaplana?
Yes, it is one of the best-known spots in the Alps, with kite schools on the shore. The webcam helps you get an idea of the conditions at that moment.
Is there snow in Silvaplana now?
Reading of 8 October 2026 at 20:06 (local time): the weather at the camera's altitude says it is snowing. Snow on the ground is not measured: the picture shows it. For the ski pistes, look at Corvatsch.
How do you get to Silvaplana?
By car over the Maloja (from Chiavenna) or from St. Moritz, a few kilometres away; by bus on the Swiss lines. The nearest railway station is St. Moritz.

At Silvaplana, a little above 1,800 metres, the Julier road enters the Engadin: from the pass, at 2,284 metres, it is a seven-kilometre descent with a drop of 469 metres. It has been a pass village since Roman times, and fragments of the columns of a shrine still stand on the pass. The Julier is usually open all year; since 2018 its traffic has bypassed the centre through a tunnel.
On the other bank of the Inn, the hamlet of Surlej, Romansh for "above the lake", is the starting point of the Corvatsch cable car. Two sections, with the Murtèl middle station at about 2,700 metres, lead up to about 3,300 metres, below Piz Corvatsch (3,451 m). Up there the weather station records an annual mean of −5 degrees and about 306 frost days a year. From Murtèl down to Surlej runs the longest floodlit piste in Switzerland, 4.2 kilometres; summer skiing ended in 1993.
Near Surlej, on the shore, stands the pyramid-shaped boulder where Friedrich Nietzsche said the idea of the eternal recurrence came to him in August 1881. Further down, the lake, at 1,791 metres, narrows to a passage about 35 metres wide and continues as Lake Champfèr. The village of Champfèr is divided too: a stream separates the half that belongs to Silvaplana from the half that belongs to St. Moritz. Every August the lake hosts Engadinwind, founded in 1998: in 2026 the Engadin windsurf marathon reached its 49th edition and world titles in wingfoil and iQFOiL were decided here.
