How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Sunny Valley webcam?
It is a 360° panorama taken from 2,715 m, beside the top of a chairlift in the upper part of the Santa Caterina Valfurva ski area. Turning the image you see the village at the bottom of the valley, the Forni valley with the Ortles-Cevedale peaks, the Valle dell'Alpe basin and Valfurva running down towards Bormio. It shows how much snow there is up high and how low the clouds are.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Sunny Valley and how do I get there?
Sunny Valley is the upper part of the Santa Caterina Valfurva pistes, in the Valle dell'Alpe at about 2,700 m, in Upper Valtellina and inside the Stelvio National Park. From Bormio you drive up to Santa Caterina, about 13 km; from there an 8-seat gondola takes you up when the lifts are running.
Discover Sunny Valley
The Valle dell'Alpe only comes into view when the gondola clears the Sobretta ridge. It is a basin at about 2,700 metres, between Santa Caterina and the summit of the mountain, white in winter and green in summer. The camera stands just above it, at 2,715 metres, beside the top of a chairlift.
The Santa Caterina pistes climb from the village, at 1,738 metres, to 2,880 on the slopes of Monte Sobretta: its summit, 3,296 metres, is about three and a half kilometres from the camera as the crow flies. The ski season usually runs from late November to April.
The panorama turns full circle. Between north-east and east, around the Forni valley, are Pizzo Tresero, Palon de la Mare, Cevedale and Gran Zebrù; to the south Corno dei Tre Signori and Monte Gavia, above the pass road; to the north-west Valfurva runs down towards Bormio. On mornings when cloud fills the valley floor, the camera looks down on it from above.
For skiers the picture shows the snow and the visibility at the top before taking the gondola. See also the Valtellina webcams, Valfurva, Santa Caterina in the village, the Forni glacier, the Gavia Pass and the map.
