What can you see from the Sils Maria webcam?

Is there snow in Sils Maria now?
Reading of 8 October 2026 at 20:06 (local time): it is not snowing and no snow is forecast for the next 24 hours. Snow on the ground is not measured: the picture shows it. At 1,800 metres snow usually covers the village from November to April and the lakes freeze: in March the Engadin Skimarathon runs across them. The webcam shows it in real time.
Why did Nietzsche stay in Sils Maria?
He arrived in the summer of 1881 and came back every summer from 1883 to 1888, renting a room in the Durisch house, now the Nietzsche-Haus. The room is preserved in its original state.
What is Val Fex?
A side valley that starts from Sils Maria, closed to private traffic: only residents may drive in. You visit it on foot or by horse-drawn carriage, and in winter by sleigh.
How do you get to Sils Maria?
By car or bus from St. Moritz (a few kilometres along the lakes) or from Chiavenna over the Maloja, open all year. In summer also by boat from Maloja, on the highest scheduled boat service in Europe.
Discover Sils Maria
Sils occupies the plain that separates Lake Sils from Lake Silvaplana, at about 1,800 metres, and is made up of two settlements: Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia. Maria is not a saint's name: it comes from the Romansh maioria, the manor farm. Baselgia means church. The municipality has a double official name, German and Romansh: Sils im Engadin/Segl.
The climate is high-mountain even in summer. The MeteoSwiss station, at 1,804 metres, records an annual mean of 2.5 degrees: −6.8 in January and 11.8 in July, with about 215 days a year when it drops below zero. Lake Sils lies at 1,797 metres and covers 4.1 square kilometres: it is the largest lake in the Engadin and the largest natural lake in the Alps above 1,000 metres.
Before the hotels, Sils lived on other things. From the late Middle Ages it exported salted and smoked trout to Italy, and for about three centuries, until the 1960s, the far end of Val Fex supplied the schist slabs used for stoves and roofs. In autumn the lake leaves a curiosity on its shores, the "Sils balls": spheres of larch needles up to 30 centimetres across, which the waves roll up in the bays beside the Chastè peninsula.
On the Chastè peninsula, which juts into the lake, a castle once stood. The local mountain is Furtschellas, part of the Corvatsch-Furtschellas ski area: pistes in winter, paths in summer, while the lake plain and Val Fex are cross-country skiing terrain. Did you know?
The Hotel Waldhaus, the grand hotel in the woods above the village, has been open since 1908 and has always stayed in the same family: today the fifth generation runs it, the brothers Claudio and Patrick Dietrich.
