Discover Forcola
Forcola is not a village but a scattered municipality in the lower Valtellina: about ten hamlets between the Adda and the Orobic side of the valley, with the town hall in Sirta. Piani, where the camera stands at 265 metres, and Selvetta are hamlets on the valley floor, on the two banks of the river and within easy reach of the SS 38.
The settled valley floor is recent. For centuries people preferred the mountainside because of the Adda's floods: the first records of houses on the slopes date from 1323, while the settlements on the flat go back to the 19th century, after the land reclamation begun under the Austrian government. In Sirta the church of San Giuseppe, started in 1877, has a dome 38 metres high.
Above the river, the Forcola of old remains. Val Fabiòlo, about four kilometres long, opens onto the Adda within the municipality: there lies Sostila, at 821 metres, a village that can only be reached on foot and that had about a hundred inhabitants until 1930. Down below, beside the SS 38, runs the railway between Colico and Sondrio, opened in 1885. For the weather nearby, see Morbegno, the other Valtellina webcams or the map.
