This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Gavia Pass webcam?

The webcam is at Rifugio Berni, at 2,541 m on the Valfurva side, and looks along the road that runs down towards Santa Caterina. On the left is the small stone chapel, in the centre the Gavia road, top right the Dosegù glacier. It shows whether there is snow up high and what the visibility is like.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is the Gavia Pass and how do I get there?

The Gavia Pass (2,621 m) links Valfurva, in Upper Valtellina, with Ponte di Legno, in upper Val Camonica: from Bormio you drive up through Santa Caterina Valfurva on the SS 300. The road is closed in winter: it is usually open from June to October, and the opening is decided by ANAS, which manages the state road. The webcam is not on the summit but at Rifugio Berni, about 2 km before it on the Valtellina side: it shows snow and visibility, it does not certify that the pass is open.

Discover Gavia Pass

Rifugio Berni stands at 2,541 metres, two kilometres before the summit on the Valfurva side, inside the Stelvio National Park. The camera is here, not at the top: the pass itself, at 2,621 metres, is a little higher up, with Lago Bianco and the Bonetta hut beside the road.

The SS 300 links Bormio with Ponte di Legno in about 44 kilometres. It follows a crossing already used in the Middle Ages, widened during the First World War and fully surfaced only towards the end of the twentieth century. On the Brescia side the carriageway is so narrow that in several places two cars cannot pass each other, with gradients of up to 16%. On that side, about three kilometres below the summit, lies Lago Nero.

From the hut the view takes in the peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale group and two glaciers, the Dosegù and the Sforzellina; on the knoll across the road stands the war memorial. Walking up from Santa Caterina takes about two hours, with 800 metres of ascent. On the ridge to the north-east is Pizzo Tresero, 3,594 metres.

The Gavia closes with the autumn snow, usually between mid and late October, and reopens between late May and June. Before you set off, the picture from the Berni hut tells you whether the tarmac is clear or white. At the summit, the peat bog around Lago Bianco is a relic of the last ice age: it is home to over 100 species of plants and lichens and is one of the very few remnants of Arctic tundra left in the Alps.
