How do you get to Valmalenco?

From Sondrio, climbing the Mallero valley to Chiesa in Valmalenco; the train goes as far as Sondrio, and from there scheduled buses run. You reach Alpe Palù by cable car from Chiesa.

Discover Valmalenco

Valmalenco begins just above Sondrio and climbs north along the Mallero, towards Piz Bernina, the easternmost four-thousander in the Alps. Chiesa in Valmalenco sits where the Lanterna stream flows into the Mallero; Alpe Palù, with the camera at about 2,000 metres, is a thousand metres higher up.

Lago Palù is one of the largest lakes in the valley: stretched from north to south, on a plateau ringed by pine woods, south of the Sasso Nero. From the top station of the cable car it is half an hour on foot, from Barchi three quarters of an hour. The hut on the shore is a stage stop on the Alta Via della Valmalenco, a loop of about 110 kilometres in eight stages, laid out between 1975 and 1976 across the Disgrazia, Bernina and Pizzo Scalino groups.

The valley has always been a way north. The Muretto Pass, at 2,562 metres, today a crossing for walkers, links it to Maloja and the Engadine: in 1512 the troops of the Three Leagues came down from there to occupy Sondrio. The ski lifts arrived in the 1960s, at Chiesa and Caspoggio, and in winter there is cross-country skiing around the lake too. Explore the other Valtellina webcams, Sondrio, Maloja or the map.
