The valley
Valposchiavo is Swiss, but it speaks Italian and faces south: the Poschiavino flows down from the Bernina Pass towards Tirano and ends in the Adda, not the Inn. At the top of the pass, Lago Bianco marks the watershed between the Adriatic and the Black Sea. The valley is narrow and steep, and the railway built between 1906 and 1910 tackles it without a rack, on gradients of up to 70 per mille: that is why it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Halfway down lies Lake Poschiavo, formed by a prehistoric landslide that dammed the valley; at the bottom, the Brusio viaduct, where the train turns a full 360 degrees on itself.
Getting there
- By car
- From Tirano the Bernina road climbs the valley to Poschiavo and the pass, then descends into the Engadin towards Pontresina and St. Moritz. The pass is kept open all year, with snow chains on board in winter. Customs are at Campocologno, just after Tirano. In summer you can also come in from Livigno over the Forcola (2,315 m).
- By train
- The best way: the Rhaetian Railway from Tirano to St. Moritz, with stops at Brusio, Miralago, Le Prese, Poschiavo, Alp Grüm and Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m, the highest point). Tirano can be reached from Milan with Trenord in about two and a half hours. As well as the panoramic Bernina Express there are regional trains, with the same scenery.
- Alpine passes
- Bernina (2,328 m): open all year thanks to continuous snow clearing; short closures are possible during snowfalls. Forcola di Livigno (2,315 m): closed in winter, usually open from the first week of June to the last Friday of November. The Bernina Pass webcam shows the road, snow and wind on the spot.
When to go
In winter the valley is white from the pass down to Poschiavo, and the train runs between walls of snow: it is the season of the Diavolezza and the pistes above Pontresina, on the Engadin side. From June the opening of the Forcola restores the Livigno–Poschiavo–Tirano loop. Summer brings swimming in the lake, the paths along the railway and bikes on the valley-floor cycle path. In autumn the larches turn yellow: October is usually the most photogenic month for the viaduct camera.
What to do
Winter
- Bernina Express in the snow
- The train runs all year: between Ospizio Bernina and Alp Grüm it crosses the highest and snowiest stretch of the line.
- Frozen Lago Bianco
- At the pass, the reservoir at 2,234 metres becomes a white expanse: worth checking on the webcam before heading up on snowshoes.
- Diavolezza
- From the Engadin side of the pass, the cable car goes up to almost 3,000 metres, facing Piz Bernina (4,049 m), the only four-thousander in the Eastern Alps.
Summer
- Brusio viaduct
- Nine stone arches, 110 metres, opened in 1908: the train makes a complete loop to lose height. The Brusio camera keeps an eye on it.
- Lake Poschiavo
- 2.5 kilometres long at 962 metres, with shores you can swim from and a circular path between Le Prese and Miralago.
- Poschiavo
- The town, at 1,014 metres, with its row of 19th-century palazzi built by Poschiavo's pastry chefs who came home rich from the capitals of Europe.
- Cycling the Forcola
- From Livigno or from Poschiavo, 18 kilometres of border road, with no hairpins on the Livigno side, open only in summer.
