This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Campo Imperatore webcam?

The webcam is at the base of the Scindarella chairlift, at about 1,880 m, in the Campo Imperatore ski area on the Gran Sasso. You see the bottom station on the left, the first pylons and the open slope of grass and stones the lift climbs, with the flat roof of a building on the right. It shows whether there is snow and whether cloud covers the ridge.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Campo Imperatore and how do I get there?

Campo Imperatore is a plateau on the Gran Sasso d'Italia, in Abruzzo, inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. From the Assergi exit of the A24 you reach Fonte Cerreto (1,115 m), where the cable car climbs to the Campo Imperatore station at 2,130 m. By car you drive up road 17 bis, which is usually closed by snow in winter: the decision lies with the Province of L'Aquila. The webcam is lower than the top of the cable car, at the base of the Scindarella chairlift.

Discover Campo Imperatore

The four-seat Scindarella chairlift starts at about 1,880 metres and tops out at 2,199. The camera is at the bottom station, near the road that climbs to the hotel: lower than the top of the cable car, which is at 2,130 metres on the western edge of Campo Imperatore. All around there is only grass and stone: there are no trees.

You get up there from Fonte Cerreto, 1,115 metres, on a cable car that gains a thousand metres of height over more than three kilometres of line. Beside the top station are the hotel built in the 1930s and the alpine botanical garden, founded in 1952 above the tree line.

A little higher, at 2,150 metres, is the observing station of Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics, opened in 1965: it is the highest professional observatory in Italy. It has two telescopes, one optical and one for the infrared. In winter, when the road is closed, the only way up is the cable car.

The ski resort has three lifts, the cable car included, and 15 kilometres of pistes. From the top of the Scindarella you can also ski down towards Le Fontari, where a six-seat chairlift takes you back to the level of the cable car. Before you set off, the picture shows whether the slope is white and how low the cloud is. See also the other Apennine webcams, Campo Felice, the ski slopes collection and the map.
