Discover Isolaccia Valdidentro
Isolaccia lies at 1,345 metres on the floor of Valdidentro, cut in two by the Viola stream. Legend has the village born on a marsh, where at first there was a single islet with a single house: hence the name. Today it is the main village of the second-largest municipality in Lombardy, after Livigno.
In Piazza IV Novembre stands the parish church of Santa Maria Nascente. It dates from 1935: it replaced the sixteenth-century church destroyed by fire in 1849, and is also dedicated to Saints Roch and Sebastian, invoked against the plague. The presbytery was painted in encaustic by Turoldo Conconi in 1954. One altar holds the sixteenth-century statues of the Madonna and the Saints of the Water, usually covered with drapes: people prayed to them when drought threatened the harvest.
Along the Viola, at Baita Noa, is the Azzurri d'Italia cross-country stadium, with the Pista Viola and two biathlon shooting ranges. Built from the 1970s onwards, it hosted the 1975 Winter Universiade, the Italian national championships of 1978 and 1980 and, in 2009, races of the Cross-Country World Cup. For those who ski without a race bib there is a 10-kilometre touring trail on the valley floor, among mountain huts, bridges and woods.
Beyond Semogo the valley divides: Val Viola on one side, the valley that climbs to the Foscagno on the other. South of Isolaccia is Cima Piazzi, which at about 3,440 metres is the highest peak in the Livigno Alps and has a glacier on its north face.
