This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can you see from the Brusio webcam?

Brusio, at 780 metres in Valposchiavo, the village of the Bernina Express spiral viaduct. Use it for the weather in the lower valley, the lowest part of Valposchiavo.

What is the Brusio spiral viaduct?

A spiral railway viaduct with nine stone arches, 110 metres long, opened on 1 July 1908. It lets the train deal with the height difference in a small space, on a gradient of 70 per mille, turning through 360 degrees.

What time does the Red Train pass through Brusio?

Several times a day in both directions: as well as the panoramic Bernina Express, the Rhaetian Railway's regional trains run here. The timetables are on the Rhaetian Railway website.

What is the weather like in Brusio now?

The webcam shows it, with the time of the snapshot. At 780 metres Brusio is the lowest part of Valposchiavo: snow in the village is less frequent than in Poschiavo and at the pass.

How do you get to Brusio?

By train on the Rhaetian Railway from Tirano (after the stops at Campocologno and Campascio) or from St. Moritz; by car on the Bernina road from Tirano, passing the customs post at Campocologno. You need an identity document: this is Switzerland.

Discover Brusio

Brusio is the last Swiss municipality before Tirano, 6.5 kilometres away, and is surrounded on three sides by Italian territory. The village sits at 780 metres, but the municipality runs from about 515 metres on the valley floor to about 2,900 on the ridges. From the village to the Bernina Pass there are more than 1,500 metres of climb: the weather in the lower valley can be very different from the weather at the pass.

The spiral viaduct comes from a rule: the line was not to exceed a gradient of 7 per cent. The builders did not want a rack railway, which would have made it impossible to run heavy trains, freight included. Just south of Brusio the valley drops too quickly, and a spiral was needed to lengthen the route. A spiral tunnel was considered, but the local geology argued against it: so the loop is made in the open, on arches spanning ten metres each.

Before the train came electricity: the Campocologno power station, built between 1904 and 1907, uses a drop of 420 metres with water from Lake Poschiavo, and when it started up it was one of the most powerful in Europe. Scattered across the municipality are the crotti, round dry-stone buildings used to keep milk and cheese cool. Higher up, in Cavaione, the inhabitants only became Swiss citizens in 1875.
