This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Samnaun webcam?

The webcam is on a meadow above Samnaun Dorf, at 1,865 m, and looks north. In the foreground are the village's hotels and houses; on the left Piz Ot, on the skyline the Alp Trider Sattel (2,488 m) and Piz Munschuns, on the right the valley running down towards Compatsch. It shows whether the snow has reached the village.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Samnaun and how do I get there?

Samnaun is in the north-eastern corner of Graubünden, in a side valley of the Lower Engadin on the Austrian border; Samnaun Dorf, at the head of the valley, is at about 1,840 m. By car you drive up from Vinadi, on the Engadin road beyond Scuol and Martina, along a narrow road with tunnels, or from Tyrol via Spiss, on the wider road. There is no railway: you arrive by PostBus from Scuol-Tarasp station, via Martina.

Discover Samnaun

Samnaun is the only municipality in Switzerland where a Bavarian dialect is spoken: the Tyrolean one of the upper Inn valley. Until the 19th century families spoke Romansh, which has since vanished from the valley; it survives in the names of the mountains and meadows. There are five hamlets, between 1,700 and 1,840 metres: Compatsch, Laret, Plan, Ravaisch and, at the far end, Samnaun Dorf.

For centuries the valley could only be reached by mule tracks. In 1830 came the first cart road, which ran down to Spiss, in Tyrol, and not towards the Engadin: that is why in 1892 the Federal Council excluded Samnaun from Swiss customs territory. The Swiss road from Vinadi opened in 1912, 8.4 kilometres with five tunnels, but the duty-free zone stayed, and people still come all the way up here to shop as well.

Tourism began in the 1930s, with walking and skiing, and the big growth came with the lifts of 1978. Today the pistes are linked, across the ridge and the border, with those of Ischgl, in Tyrol, in one of the largest ski areas in the Eastern Alps. From the meadow above the village, the picture shows whether the snow has come down to 1,800 metres. Explore the other Engadin webcams, Scuol, Ardez or the map.

In 1995 the world's first cable car with double-decker cabins went into service at Samnaun: the first cabins carried 180 people each. It climbs from Ravaisch to the Alp Trider Sattel, the saddle the webcam shows on the skyline.
