Grosio and Grosotto are two neighbouring municipalities on the SS 38, the road that climbs from Tirano to Bormio: Grosio is at 656 metres, about 14 kilometres from Tirano, and Grosotto a little lower, at 605. Between the two villages rises the Dosso dei Castelli, with the Rupe Magna and the Rock Engravings Park. The Grosio webcam looks at the village; the Grosotto one at a small lake in a park on the floor of the Adda valley. These are the cameras to open for the weather in Grosio and to find out, before driving on to the upper valley, whether it is raining or snowing at this height.
The archaeological park is the reason many people stop here. More than five thousand figures have been counted on the Rupe Magna, carved into the rock between the end of the Neolithic and the Iron Age: it was discovered in 1966 by Davide Pace, who in 1970 found more engravings on the nearby Dosso Giroldo. Between 1991 and 1995 the whole rock was recorded. On the same hill stand the remains of the two castles: the Castello Vecchio, or castle of San Faustino, partly cut out of the rock, and the Castello Nuovo, which the Visconti had built in the 14th century with a double ring of walls.
In the village of Grosio stands Villa Visconti Venosta, for centuries the family's home: today it houses the museum and the municipal library and looks onto a large garden. In Grosotto the landmark is the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie, in Via Patrioti: born of a vow made in 1487, it was rebuilt between 1609 and 1634 and holds an 18th-century organ in a carved case. The sanctuary is not in the picture: the Grosotto camera is for the weather and for snow on the valley floor.
