This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Varenna webcam?
The webcam is not in the village of Varenna: it stands higher up, in the municipality of Perledo, on the slope above Vezio, the hamlet with the castle that overlooks Varenna, at about 550 m, and looks south-west. In the foreground are the roofs of Vezio, its bell tower and the castle tower; across the water is the wooded Bellagio headland, where the lake divides into the Lecco and Como branches, and in the distance the Balbianello point and the shore between Tremezzo and Cadenabbia. The roofs of Varenna, on the shore below the castle, are not in view.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Varenna and how do I get there?
Varenna is on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco, about twenty kilometres north of Lecco. It has a station on the Milan-Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano railway and the landing stage of the ferries to Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia, which also carry cars. Vezio is a 20 to 30 minute walk up from the village, or you can drive up by the road to Esino Lario.
Discover Varenna
Vezio is a handful of houses around a bell tower, about 150 metres above Varenna. It belongs to the municipality of Perledo, while the castle beside it lies almost entirely in that of Varenna. The camera looks down on it from the Perledo slope, and from there the shape of the lake is clear: in front of the Bellagio headland the water divides, left towards Lecco, right towards Como.
The castle has stood up there for more than a thousand years: a square, battlemented tower ringed by walls, which legend says was built by the Lombard queen Theodelinda. An olive grove grows around it. From Varenna you reach it by a steep but short mule track, and beside the hamlet runs the Sentiero del Viandante, the old path halfway up the slope along the eastern shore.
On the shore, Varenna is a village of just over six hundred people. Villa Monastero, which began as a Cistercian convent, is now a house museum with a botanical garden at the water's edge. From the pier the ferries cross the lake to Bellagio, Menaggio and Cadenabbia. There is no webcam in Bellagio on this site: from here you see its wooded point and its eastern side, while the village itself, which faces west, is framed from the opposite shore by the Tremezzo camera. Did you know?
The Fiumelatte, just south of Varenna, is only 250 metres long from its source to the lake: it appears towards the end of March and disappears in October. Leonardo da Vinci mentions it in the Codex Atlanticus as 'Fiumelaccio'.
