This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Zernez webcam?
The webcam is in the tower of Planta-Wildenberg Castle and looks towards Runatsch and the Ofen Pass (Passo del Forno). In the foreground are the village houses and a meadow, on the right a road with a car park, behind them the wooded slopes and the mountains; the opening in the tower frames the picture.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Zernez and how do I get there?
Zernez is in the Lower Engadin, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, at 1,474 m, where the Spöl flows into the Inn. It has a Rhaetian Railway station on the Engadin line. By car you arrive from St. Moritz or from Scuol along the valley, from Val Müstair over the Ofen Pass, from Klosters on the Vereina shuttle train and, when the pass is open, from Davos over the Flüela.
Discover Zernez
Zernez has always been a crossroads: here the Spöl flows into the Inn, and the Ofen Pass road leaves the Engadin road for Val Müstair. The village lies at 1,474 metres on the broad valley floor, and appears in documents in 1131 as Ernece. Since 2015 the municipality has also included Susch and Lavin, and reaches as far as the Flüela Pass.
The castle was the home of the Planta-Wildenberg family, who dominated the politics of Zernez and the Lower Engadin until the 19th century; since 1956 it has belonged to the municipality. It stands on the eastern edge of Runatsch, the old part of the village. Across the road is the National Park visitor centre, from 2008: two cubes of white concrete, slightly offset, designed by the architect Valerio Olgiati.
Sixty-eight per cent of the Swiss National Park, founded in 1914, lies on Zernez territory, and the village is where walks into the park set out. For centuries, until the end of the 19th century, timber from these forests was floated down the Inn to Hall, in Tyrol. The railway arrived in 1913. Before you drive up to the pass, the picture shows what the weather is doing on the Ofen side. Explore the other Engadin webcams, the Ofen Pass, the Flüela Pass, Ardez or the map.
Did you know?
The square tower the webcam looks out from is the oldest part of Planta-Wildenberg Castle: it most probably dates from the 13th century. Since 2007 the castle has been the seat of the Swiss National Park administration.
