Why is Samedan airport famous?
It is one of the highest airports in Europe, at 1,707 metres, reserved for private and general aviation: no scheduled flights. The 1,800-metre runway is ringed by mountains, and the thin air makes take-offs and landings among the most demanding in the world.
Is there snow in Samedan now?

At 1,700 metres snow on the valley floor usually stays from November to April. The webcam shows it in real time; in winter the plain is home to the cross-country trails.
How do you get to Samedan?
By train on the Rhaetian Railway: Samedan is the junction between the Albula line from Chur, the lines to St. Moritz and Pontresina, and the Lower Engadin line towards Scuol. By car over the Maloja, the Bernina or the Julier, usually open all year.

Discover Samedan
Samedan is the administrative centre of the Upper Engadin: the valley's hospital, the region's largest employer, is based here. The village lies at about 1,700 metres, on the western edge of the plain where the Flaz, coming down from Pontresina, joins the Inn, at the foot of Piz Ot, a peak of over 3,200 metres.
Cold air settles on the plain and forms cold pools: that is why winter nights here can be very harsh. The MeteoSwiss station, at 1,709 metres, records an annual mean of 2.3 degrees, with −8.4 in January and 12.3 in July. On 227 days a year the temperature falls below zero, and even July brings up to two frosts on average.
In the centre the houses of the Salis and Planta families still stand. The Chesa Planta, built in 1595, houses the cultural archive of the Upper Engadin, a museum of domestic life and, since 1946, a Romansh library; the tower La Tuor dates from the 13th century. To protect the village from floods, in 2004 the Flaz was moved into a new bed on the eastern side of the airport: since then the river has been two kilometres longer.
The municipal territory reaches up to Muottas Muragl, at 2,453 metres. The funicular that climbs there from Punt Muragl, between Samedan and Pontresina, dates from 1907 and is the oldest mountain railway in the Engadin: about 2,200 metres of track for a climb of 709. Did you know?
On the second Sunday of March the airport runway becomes part of the Engadin Skimarathon course, 42 km from Maloja to S-chanf across the frozen lakes: held since 1969, with more than 11,000 skiers every year.
