This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Bellano webcam?
The webcam is on a house on the lakeshore, just north of the centre of Bellano, a little above the water, and looks west. On the left is the village waterfront, with its tree-lined promenade and the piers; opposite, across the lake, Menaggio at the foot of Monte Crocione and, further right, the villages of the western shore below Monte Grona. From autumn to spring the sun sets behind these mountains, right in front of the camera.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Bellano and how do I get there?
Bellano is on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco, about 25 km from Lecco, where the Pioverna stream comes down from Valsassina to the lake. It has a station on the Milan-Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano railway and, above the village, a junction of the SS 36 road; the boats of the Como-Colico line also call here.
Discover Bellano
Bellano stands where the Pioverna, the stream of Valsassina, reaches the lake. Just before it comes out among the houses the water has carved the Orrido: a narrow, roaring gorge a stone's throw from the church, visited on walkways fixed to the walls sheer above the water. For centuries that current drove ironworks, spinning mills and a cotton mill.
The church of Santi Nazaro e Celso has a façade in bands of white and black marble, with a large rose window: it was rebuilt in the mid-14th century. Tommaso Grossi, poet and novelist, a close friend of Manzoni and author of 'Marco Visconti', was born in Bellano in 1790: the village has put up a monument to him. Bellano is on the list of 'I borghi più belli d'Italia', Italy's most beautiful villages.
The camera looks the other way, towards the water: it shows whether the lake is calm or choppy, whether the peaks opposite are clear of cloud and what the light is like towards evening. The boats of the Como-Colico line call at the pier, and the railway that climbs from Milan to Valtellina stops in the village. Did you know?
At the entrance to the Orrido di Bellano gorge stands a small tower perched on a boulder sheer above the stream: it is called Ca' del Diavol, the devil's house, after the figures painted on its top storey, one of them a devil.
