This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can you see from the Chiavenna webcam?

Chiavenna at 333 metres, at the fork between the Splügen road and the Maloja road, north of Lake Como. Use it for the weather in Valchiavenna and as a "low" reference point before climbing to the passes.

What is the weather like in Chiavenna now?

The webcam shows it, with the time of the snapshot. At 333 metres snow in the town is rare, and chestnut trees and vines grow on the valley floor.

What are the crotti of Chiavenna?

Natural cellars among the boulders of ancient landslides, where the sorel, a current of air that comes out of the rock at about 8 degrees all year round, keeps wine, bresaola and cheeses. In September the Sagra dei Crotti opens them to the public.

Is the Splügen Pass open?

The Splügen closes in winter, usually from November until spring: it reopens between late April and May. The Maloja, the other road from Chiavenna towards Switzerland, is open all year.

How do you get to Chiavenna by train?

With Trenord: from Milan to Colico, then the Colico–Chiavenna line, 26 kilometres in about half an hour. Swiss buses leave Chiavenna for Bregaglia and St. Moritz.

Discover Chiavenna

The Romans called it Clavenna, a name traditionally read as the “key” to the passes, from the Latin clavis. The town lies at 333 metres on the river Mera, just upstream of its confluence with the Liro. After the fall of the Sforza it passed to the Three Leagues of the Grisons, and after the French Revolution it asked, together with Valtellina and Bormio, to join the Cisalpine Republic.

Above the town rise two crags, the Paradiso and the Castellaccio, separated by the Caurga: a cleft that is in fact a soapstone quarry from Roman times, later adapted for defence. On the hill stood the fortress, mentioned as early as 995 and ruined in 1525 and again in 1639. Since 1955 the two crags, linked by a suspended footbridge, have been an archaeological and botanical park, part of the Museo della Valchiavenna.

The collegiate church of San Lorenzo has a sixteenth-century bell tower and, in the baptistery, a font dating from 1156. The Museo del Tesoro holds the Pace di Chiavenna, a piece of goldwork from the 11th or 12th century: gilded plates, enamels, pearls and gems on a walnut panel. Just outside town, towards Bregaglia, the Marmitte dei Giganti park shows the potholes carved into the rock during the last ice age. Did you know?

Chiavenna's crotti are natural cellars cooled by the sorel, a current of air that comes out of cracks in the rock at about 8 °C, in summer as in winter: that is how wine and food are kept there.
