This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Pontresina webcam?
The webcam is in the village, at about 1,800 m, and looks south-west over a park of larches. Val Roseg opens straight ahead, between the wooded slopes of Piz Chalchagn and Piz Rosatsch, with the peaks and glaciers of the Bernina group at its far end; in the middle you see the station quarter, and on the right the mountains on the other side of the Upper Engadin.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Pontresina and how do I get there?
Pontresina is in the Upper Engadin, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, at 1,805 m, in Val Bernina, at the foot of the Bernina Pass. It has a Rhaetian Railway station on the Bernina line between St. Moritz and Tirano, and is the terminus of the trains from Samedan. By car you arrive from Samedan and St. Moritz, or from Tirano and Poschiavo over the Bernina Pass, which is normally open all year.
Discover Pontresina
The name Pontresina first appears in 1137 as 'ad Pontem Sarisinam': there is a bridge in it, and in Romansh the village is called Puntraschigna. It is the village of Val Bernina, at 1,805 metres, on the road that climbs to the pass. The oldest quarters are Laret, San Spiert and Giarsun; above Giarsun stand the ruins of a 13th-century tower, the Spaniola.
Mountaineers arrived around 1850, most of them English, drawn by Piz Bernina, and the village has lived off the mountains ever since: its history as a resort is told in the Museum Alpin. The church of Santa Maria, above the houses, holds important wall paintings; close by runs the Ibex Promenade, a path about one kilometre long. The railway was built between 1908 and 1910, and two lines with different electrical systems meet at the station: the Bernina line, on direct current, and the line to Samedan, on alternating current.
Val Roseg begins at the station: a dozen kilometres with no cars, a protected landscape since 1977, which you travel on foot, by horse-drawn carriage or, in winter, on cross-country skis, up to the glaciers. The camera frames its entrance: it shows at once whether the peaks at the far end are clear of cloud and how far down the snow has come. Did you know?
In spring, when there is still snow up high and the meadows on the valley floor are already green, ibex come down to graze at the very edge of Pontresina. They come from Piz Albris, where one of the largest colonies in Switzerland has grown up since 1921.
