How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Lagalb webcam?
The webcam is at the Lagalb top station, at 2,893 m, and looks south: below, Lago Bianco on the Bernina Pass; opposite, the dark pyramid of Sassal Mason and the Cambrena glacier; to the left, in the distance, Valposchiavo. Use it to see snow and cloud on the pass from above.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Lagalb and how do I get there?
Piz Lagalb is in the Upper Engadin, in the municipality of Pontresina (Graubünden), above the Bernina Pass, opposite the Diavolezza. The cable car starts from the pass road, at about 2,100 m, near the Rhaetian Railway stop Bernina Lagalb, and runs in winter, during the ski season.
Discover Lagalb
Lagalb means "white lake": the name comes from the lake at the foot of the mountain. Piz Lagalb stands between Val Bernina and Val Minor; the cable car climbs almost 800 metres in a few minutes and reaches 2,893 metres, just below the summit (2,959 m), which you reach on foot from the station. From up there the view also runs north, along Val Bernina towards Pontresina.
Here you ski on long, steep pistes, marked red or black. The "Minor" has a gradient of 86 per cent and is described as the steepest groomed piste in Graubünden. In spring the locals love the La Rösa run, down towards Valposchiavo. At the top station there is a restaurant with a terrace: the view goes from Lago Bianco to Valposchiavo and on to Valtellina.
The cable car works during the ski season, usually in winter. When the lifts are closed, the camera goes on showing the pass from above: the snow along the road, the lake frozen or open, the clouds coming up from the south. Did you know?
Lagalb has a club of its own, the "Club 8848": you join by skiing down to the valley eleven times and walking up four times from the station to the summit. Together that makes 8,848 metres of height difference, the height of Everest.
