This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Monte Cimone webcam?

The webcam is on a terrace at Passo del Lupo, at about 1,550 m, next to the bottom station of the cable car, and looks south-west. In front are the pistes of the Cimone ski area, among the woods; in the background, when it is clear, the summit of Monte Cimone (2,165 m), with its antennas on top. In the foreground you can see the terrace railing and, on the right, the cables of the cable car that climbs to Pian Cavallaro.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Monte Cimone and how do I get there?

Monte Cimone (2,165 m) is the highest peak of the northern Apennines, in the province of Modena. Passo del Lupo, where the camera stands, is reached by car from Sestola, which is about 70 km from Modena and 85 from Bologna. From the pass a cable car goes up to Pian Cavallaro, at over 1,800 m, and from there you continue on foot towards the summit.

Discover Monte Cimone

Passo del Lupo is the best-known way into the Cimone ski area: a pass at about 1,550 metres, above Sestola, where the pistes run right up to the hotels. Here you find the ski schools, the hire shops and the bottom station of the cable car. The camera looks from a terrace towards the mountain, and on clear days the summit is in the middle of the picture.

The ski area has more than 50 kilometres of pistes, all linked together, on the slopes of Monte Cimone between the municipalities of Sestola, Fanano, Montecreto and Riolunato. From Passo del Lupo the cable car goes up to Pian Cavallaro, at over 1,800 metres: in winter it serves the upper pistes, in summer it is the starting point for the walk to the summit.

The summit, at 2,165 metres, is the highest in the northern Apennines. It is a broad flat top taken up by the antennas of the Italian Air Force, which has a weather station here, and by the CNR climate observatory. Lower down, at Passo del Lupo, the Modena section of the Italian Alpine Club looks after the Esperia alpine botanical garden, at 1,500 metres, inside a beech wood; at the same altitude, not far away, is Lago della Ninfa.

Before you set off, the picture shows whether the pistes are white and whether the summit is clear of cloud. See also the Sestola webcam, in the village, Abetone on the Tuscan side, the other Apennine webcams, the ski slopes or the map.
