This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Piateda webcam?

The camera is at Busteggia, a hamlet of Piateda, at about 303 m, and looks west along the floor of Valtellina: in the foreground the roofs of the hamlet, on the right the Rhaetian side with its terraces, the town of Sondrio and Monte Rolla above it, on the left the first slopes of the Orobie Alps. The Adda flows about a kilometre away and is outside the picture.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Piateda and how do I get there?

Piateda is in middle Valtellina, in the province of Sondrio, on the left bank of the Adda, about 5 km east of Sondrio. By car you leave the SS 38 Stelvio road shortly after Sondrio and cross the river; the nearest railway stop is Poggiridenti-Tresivio-Piateda, on the Sondrio-Tirano line.

Discover Piateda

Busteggia is the westernmost hamlet of Piateda, at about 303 metres, some fifteen metres higher than the Adda. A weather observatory has been here since 2004, and the camera that looks west follows the valley as far as the narrows at the Tartano. In winter the Orobie Alps, just to the south, cast their shadow: there is little sun, though it never disappears completely, and on clear days the cold settles here, with temperatures as much as several degrees lower than on the slopes.

The municipality is far larger than what you see from the valley floor: to the north it ends at the Adda, to the south it takes in the whole of Val Venina, with Pizzo Redorta and Punta di Scais, both 3,038 metres high. In all it covers almost 71 square kilometres. Up there, Ambria and Agneda are lived in mainly in summer. The name Venina comes from "vena", vein: the veins of iron, mined as early as the 14th century, with smelting furnaces at over 2,200 metres.

On the valley floor the village is recent. The parish church of the Santissimo Crocifisso, opposite the town hall, dates from the 1930s and was built after the valley floor was drained; Santa Caterina at Boffetto, from the 16th century, and Sant'Antonio Abate at Piateda Alta, begun in 1589, are older. The water of the side valleys feeds the Venina power station, in service since 1923.

For anyone travelling between Sondrio and Tirano, the picture shows whether there is fog, rain or sunshine on the valley floor. Explore the other Valtellina webcams, Sondrio, Tirano, Valmalenco or the map.
