This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Tonale Pass webcam?

The webcam is at the pass, at 1,880 m, with a 180-degree panorama: on the left the war memorial with its winged statue and the state road, in the centre and on the right the base stations of the ski lifts and the slopes of the pistes. It shows whether there is snow at the pass and on the pistes.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is the Tonale Pass and how do I get there?

The Tonale Pass (Passo del Tonale, 1,883 m) is on the border between Lombardy and Trentino, between Val Camonica and Val di Sole. You reach it on the SS 42 state road: from Ponte di Legno on the Brescia side, from Vermiglio on the Trentino side. It is open all year round, with possible short closures during the heaviest snowfalls; a gondola also runs up from Ponte di Legno.

Discover Tonale Pass

The Tonale is a broad, open saddle at 1,883 metres, between the Ortler Alps to the north and the Adamello and Presanella groups to the south. On one side lie Val Camonica and the province of Brescia, on the other Val di Sole and Trentino: the SS 42 state road links them all year round, and the camera stands right on the pass, at 1,880 metres.

The watershed between the Po and the Adige runs across the pass, and beside the road, near the base of the gondola to Passo Paradiso, a peat bog survives: a wetland protected by the European Natura 2000 network, which you can visit on a level loop path of about 750 metres. Since 1933 the Giro d'Italia has also come over the Tonale.

In winter the pass is a ski resort. The pistes start beside the road, as the picture shows, and two gondolas climb to the Presena glacier, up to 3,000 metres, where skiing usually runs from the first snowfalls of November to mid-May. A gondola links the Tonale with Ponte di Legno, in an area of about 100 kilometres of pistes. Before you set off, the picture shows how much snow there is at the pass and whether the road is clear. At the Tonale the waters part: those on the Lombardy side run down to the Oglio and the Po, those on the Trentino side, with the Vermigliana stream, to the Noce and the Adige.
