What can I see on the Sala Comacina webcam?
The webcam is on the hillside above Sala Comacina and looks east: at the bottom left the roofs of the village, just beyond them Isola Comacina, the only island in Lake Como, and behind the island the wooded Balbianello headland. On the left, at the back of the bay, is the Ossuccio shore; on the opposite side of the lake, on the right, the houses of Lezzeno stretch along the water. On clear days the Grigne can be seen in the distance.
Is the image live? How often does it update?

Where is Sala Comacina and how do I get there?
Sala Comacina is a municipality of about 450 inhabitants on the western shore of Lake Como, in the province of Como, between Colonno and Ossuccio, about 25 km from Como along the SS 340 Regina road. You arrive by car, by bus from Como or by boat; there is no railway on this shore. Isola Comacina can only be reached by boat.

The island in front of the camera is a little over half a kilometre long and about 200 metres wide. In the Middle Ages it was a stronghold with its own churches, allied with Milan against Como, and Sala had one of the fortifications that defended it from the mainland. In 1169 the men of Como, allies of Frederick Barbarossa, razed it to the ground: the island has never been a village since.
The name Sala is said to go back even further: the “sala” would have been the place where the tributes owed to the Lombards, who had conquered the island, were collected. Today the village has about 450 inhabitants and a church, San Bartolomeo, which already existed in the Middle Ages and keeps fourteenth-century frescoes.
On the island there remain the ruins of the basilica of Sant'Eufemia, founded in 1031, the little baroque church of San Giovanni and three rationalist houses for artists, designed by Pietro Lingeri. The water between the island and the shore is the Zoca de l'oli, the oil basin: the mild climate lets the olive tree grow here. Every year, around 24 June, the feast of San Giovanni brings a procession of boats and fireworks to the lake.
The Greenway del Lago di Como passes through Sala: about 10 kilometres on foot from Colonno to Cadenabbia. See also Lenno and Tremezzo, further north, Como, the other Lake Como webcams or the map.
