This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Trepalle webcam?
The webcam is in Trepalle, above 2,000 m, and looks over the hamlet from above a meadow: the houses scattered across the valley and, on the slope opposite, the SS 301 climbing towards Passo d'Eira and Livigno. Use it to check snow and visibility before you take the road.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Trepalle and how do I get there?
Trepalle is a hamlet of Livigno, in upper Valtellina, on the SS 301 between the Foscagno Pass (2,291 m) and Passo d'Eira (2,208 m). From Bormio you drive up through Valdidentro and over the Foscagno; from Livigno you come over the Eira. The road is open all year.
Discover Trepalle
Trepalle is not a village gathered around a square: it is a handful of hamlets scattered over the meadows, above two thousand metres, in the valley the SS 301 crosses between the Foscagno and the Eira. The centre is Sant'Anna, with the church; other houses lie lower down, others climb as far as the pass. That is why it is hard to give the place a single altitude.
For centuries Trepalle depended on Pedenosso, in Valdidentro. At the end of the sixteenth century there was still no church here and perhaps no village either: it was formed by families from Pedenosso who began to stay up here all year round, and not only in summer. In 1648 they were allowed to build a church dedicated to St Anne, and in 1690 to baptise and bury their dead on the spot. Today's building dates from 1924: a single nave, lined throughout with larch.
For a long time people here lived on livestock, milk and hay. Today the road and the snow matter too: like the whole municipality of Livigno, Trepalle is a duty-free zone, and a four-seater chairlift goes up from the hamlet to Mottolino. Before you tackle the two passes, the picture tells you whether it has snowed in the village. Did you know?
In the summer of 1948 the writer Giovannino Guareschi came up to Trepalle and met its parish priest, don Alessandro Parenti, who also inspired some pages of his Don Camillo stories.
