This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Muottas Muragl webcam?

The webcam is on Muottas Muragl, at about 2,450 m, and looks south. In the centre is the dark summit of Piz Chalchagn, with Piz Bernina (4,049 m) behind it, and further left Piz Palü; on the right Val Roseg opens up, closed at its head by glaciers, with the houses of Pontresina below. Use it to see the weather on the peaks and the snow in the valley.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Muottas Muragl and how do I get there?

Muottas Muragl is in the Upper Engadin (Graubünden), in the territory of Samedan, above Punt Muragl, between Samedan and Pontresina. You go up by funicular from Punt Muragl, where Rhaetian Railway trains stop: Punt Muragl on the line from Samedan to Pontresina and Punt Muragl Staz on the Bernina line.

Discover Muottas Muragl

"Whoever wants to see the Engadin goes to Muottas Muragl": the advice comes from a travel guide of 1867, when you walked up from the valley floor in two and a half hours. Since 9 August 1907 the funicular from Punt Muragl has made the climb, the first funicular in the Upper Engadin.

The first red cars, made of wood, ran for 55 years; in 1962 came today's two, with 80 places each. With the funicular, in 1907, the hotel next to the top station opened too. From up there you see the lakes of the Upper Engadin and the ice-covered peaks of the Bernina group at the same time, and paragliders take off from the meadow near the station.

Paths for every pace start from the top station: the panorama trail, almost seven kilometres in about two hours, keeps the lakes and the Bernina group in view all the way; another walk leads to the small lake Lej Muragl, to the whistling of the marmots. In winter the philosophers' path offers walkers the sayings of poets and thinkers along the way, and there is a toboggan run of 4.2 kilometres and twenty bends, dropping about 700 metres to the valley.
