This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can you see from the Tirano webcam?

Tirano at 441 metres, in the middle Valtellina, terminus of the Bernina Red Train. Use it to check the weather in the valley and at the departure point of the train for Switzerland.

Where does the Bernina Red Train leave from?

From the Rhaetian Railway station in Tirano, next to the station for Trenord trains from Milan. The line climbs to Ospizio Bernina (2,253 m) and descends to St. Moritz: about 60 kilometres, gradients of up to 70 per mille without a rack, UNESCO World Heritage since 2008.

What is the weather like in Tirano now?

The webcam shows it, with the time of the snapshot. At 441 metres snow in the town is occasional; already at Poschiavo, some forty minutes further up by train, it is the rule in winter.

What is there to see in Tirano?

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano, the most important religious monument in Valtellina, built after the apparition of 1504; the old town with its noble palazzi; and the Red Train running through the town down the middle of the street.

How do you get to Tirano from Milan?

By Trenord train from Milano Centrale, about two and a half hours, or by car on the SS 38. Tirano is where you change trains for Switzerland and catch the bus for Bormio and Livigno.

Discover Tirano

Tirano lies at 441 metres, where the Poschiavino, the river of Valposchiavo, joins the Adda after about three kilometres on Italian soil. To defend the valley from Graubünden, Ludovico il Moro had the town fortified: the walls were begun in April 1492 and finished in December of the following year. Three gates remain, named after the roads that left from them: Milanese, Bormina and Poschiavina.

The walls were not enough: from 1512 Valtellina passed to the Three Leagues. Porta Poschiavina, which guarded the wooden bridge over the Adda, was built into the palace of the podestà, which remained the seat of government under Graubünden rule. In 1514, with the new government's permission, the San Michele fair was held for several days beside the sanctuary.

The railway arrived from Sondrio on 29 June 1902. On 1 July 1908 the first section of the Bernina line opened, from Tirano to Poschiavo; the whole line was ready on 5 July 1910, and since the winter of 1913–14 it has stayed open all year. So two gauges meet in Tirano: 1,435 millimetres for the line from Sondrio, 1,000 for the red trains.

In town stands Palazzo Salis, a noble residence from the 17th century. Around it, the Rhaetian side is terraced with vineyards, the source of Sforzato, and the Orobic side is planted with apple orchards; the hamlets include Baruffini, Cologna, Madonna and Roncaiola. The image shows the weather on the valley floor, the weather that meets you as you step off the train.
