This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Rifugio Marco e Rosa webcam?

The camera is at the hut, at 3,609 m on the Forcola di Cresta Güzza, and looks south-west, above Valmalenco: below, the Scerscen Superiore glacier; in the distance, Monte Disgrazia (3,678 m); on the right, a rock ridge of the Bernina group. When the clouds stay lower down, the valley disappears under a sea of cloud.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is the Rifugio Marco e Rosa and how do I get there?

The hut is in the municipality of Lanzada, in upper Valmalenco (province of Sondrio), on the Forcola di Cresta Güzza, on the border with Switzerland. No footpath reaches it: the only ways up are mountaineering routes, from the Marinelli Bombardieri hut across the Scerscen Superiore glacier or from the Diavolezza, on the Swiss side. You need glacier equipment and experience.

Discover Rifugio Marco e Rosa

The Marco e Rosa stands on a saddle of rock between two glaciers: to the north the Morteratsch, in Switzerland, to the south the Scerscen Superiore, in Valmalenco. It is the highest hut in Lombardy and was built as a base for those climbing Piz Bernina from the Italian side: the Bernina, a little further north, is the highest peak in the Eastern Alps.

The first hut was built in the summer of 1913. The materials came from the Swiss side, across the Morteratsch glacier, on portable cableways, among crevasses and constant snowfalls. It was meant to last about twenty years. In 1964 a larger, prefabricated building was put up beside it, flown up by helicopter from the Diavolezza; today's hut, built of wood and with solar energy systems, was inaugurated on 13 July 2003. The 1913 cabin is still there and serves as the winter room.

The picture carries the data of the hut's weather station: temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation. The Marco e Rosa is one of the "Rifugi sentinella del clima e dell'ambiente" (sentinel huts for climate and environment), a network of stations in huts and observatories along the Alps and the Apennines, set up to follow how the climate is changing in the mountains, where temperatures are rising almost twice as fast as the global average.

For those who stay in the valley, the camera shows what the weather is doing on the glaciers and how high the top of the clouds is. Explore the other Valtellina webcams, Lago Palù, the Bernina Pass or the map.

Did you know?

Marco and Rosa were husband and wife: Marco De Marchi and Rosa Curioni paid for the first hut, inaugurated on 14 September 1913. The idea was born in 1910, when a climb of the Bernina they were making with the mountaineer Alfredo Corti came to a halt on this very saddle.
