This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Campo Felice webcam?
The webcam is at the small Lago Cisterna reservoir, at 1,630 m, in the middle of the ski area. It frames two chairlifts climbing through the beech woods to the ridge: the Monterotondo on the left, the Cisterna on the right. It shows whether the pistes have snow and what the sky is doing above the crest.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Campo Felice and how do I get there?
Campo Felice is a plateau in the Abruzzo Apennines, in the province of L'Aquila, between the municipalities of Lucoli and Rocca di Cambio. By car you leave the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway at Tornimparte and drive up for about 16 km to the lifts. From the Altopiano delle Rocche you come through the Serralunga tunnel, about 1.3 km long.
Discover Campo Felice
Campo Felice is a karst basin in the Abruzzo Apennines: at most 10 kilometres long and 5 wide, at a little over 1,500 metres, closed in by mountains close to or above 2,000. The ski area takes up the eastern side, below Monte Rotondo (2,064 m). The camera stands among the pistes, at the small Lago Cisterna reservoir, where two chairlifts set off.
The spot was chosen in the late 1960s. The resort was the idea of Aldo Jacovitti, who served as mayor of Rocca di Cambio and brought to Abruzzo the planner Jean Cognet, the downhill champion Émile Allais and the Abruzzo mountain guide Gigi Panei. The exact place, the resort recounts, was picked out by Giuseppe Fabre, a general of the Alpini, on a military map while on a train to Rome. The piste that runs down beside the Cisterna chairlift is named after Panei.
Today there are fifteen lifts, nine of them chairlifts, and more than 30 kilometres of pistes: from near Monte Rotondo they run down to the 1,410 metres of Caporitorto, on the Rocca di Cambio side. There are two ways in: the Campo Felice plain, for those coming from the A24, and Brecciara, on the side of the Altopiano delle Rocche. The Serralunga tunnel, on state road 696, links the two.
From Monte Rotondo, on clear days, you can see the Gran Sasso, the Sirente, the Velino and the Maiella. From the little lake you can tell, more simply, whether the snow has covered the beech woods all the way down. Did you know?
The small lake at the foot of the webcam is a water reserve for snowmaking: together with a second basin it holds 82 million litres, which feed 380 snow guns.
