This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Colico webcam?
The webcam is at the marina of Colico, at lake level, about 200 m, and looks west over the upper part of Lake Como. On the left are the lakefront with its piers and the wooded headland of Montecchio Sud; opposite, on the western shore, the villages from Dongo to Domaso, with Gravedona in the middle, and further left Monte Bregagno. The water in the foreground shows at once whether there is wind, and the temperature and wind from the weather station are printed on the picture.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Colico and how do I get there?
Colico is the last town on the eastern shore of Lake Como, in the province of Lecco, where Valtellina and Valchiavenna reach the lake. You get there by the SS 36 road from Lecco, a little over 40 km away, or by train: the station is on the Milan-Lecco-Sondrio-Tirano railway and the line to Chiavenna starts here. The boats of the Como-Colico line also end their run here.
Discover Colico
Colico is the end of the lake and the start of the valleys: here the eastern shore ends and you take the SS 38 road up Valtellina or the road to Chiavenna and the Splügen Pass. Behind the town rises Monte Legnone, over 2,600 metres. The camera is at the marina, right at water level, and looks west over the upper lake: the right place to see whether the afternoon Breva has already come in.
Whoever controlled the passes had to hold this spot. In 1603 the Count of Fuentes, Spanish governor of Milan, had a fort built on one of the hills of the plain, to keep the Grisons in check; Napoleon's army dismantled it in 1796 and its ruins remain. On another hill, Montecchio Nord, the fort built on the eve of the First World War still has its four guns.
On the tip of the Olgiasca peninsula, which closes off the little lake of Piona, stands Piona priory: the church was consecrated in 1138, the cloister dates from the years between 1252 and 1257, and Cistercian monks have lived there since 1938. In front of the town, when the wind is up, the lake fills with sails and kites. See also Domaso on the other shore, Morbegno and Chiavenna in the two valleys, the other Lake Como webcams or the map.
Did you know?
From 15 October 1902 the trains between Lecco, Colico, Sondrio and Chiavenna ran on three-phase alternating current: it was one of the first experiments in electric traction on Italian railways.
