How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Sestola webcam?
The webcam is in the centre of Sestola, at 1,020 m, above the rooftops, and looks east along the main street, with the coloured fronts of its houses. At the top left is the castle, on the spur of rock that overlooks the village; a small battlemented tower rises among the roofs. In the foreground you can see the roofs and chimneys of the houses nearby.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Sestola and how do I get there?
Sestola is in Emilia-Romagna, in the Modena Apennines, at 1,020 m, at the foot of Monte Cimone. By car it is about 70 km from Modena and 85 from Bologna. The village has no railway station: you take the train to Modena and continue by bus, changing at Pavullo nel Frignano.
Discover Sestola
Sestola stands at 1,020 metres in the Modena Apennines, at the foot of Monte Cimone. The oldest part of the village grew up against the spur of rock on which the castle stands; just below runs Corso Libertà, the street of coloured houses that the camera shows from above the rooftops.
From the fourteenth century the castle was the seat of the governor the Este family sent to the Frignano, and Sestola was the capital of that mountain province. At the end of the eighteenth century the new road between Modena and Tuscany passed far from the village, which was left off the trade routes; after the Restoration the fortress became a prison. Today it houses a group of museums, including one on mountain life and one of mechanical musical instruments.
Today Sestola lives on tourism, in summer and in winter: the Touring Club Italiano has awarded it its Orange Flag. From the centre a chairlift goes up to Pian del Falco. Higher up, at Passo del Lupo, are the pistes of the ski area and the cable car towards the summit.
In winter the picture shows whether the snow has come down as far as the village or whether you have to go higher to find it. See the Monte Cimone webcam from Passo del Lupo, Abetone on the Tuscan side, the other Apennine webcams or the map.
Did you know?
The castle of Sestola first appears in a document of 753, a charter of the Lombard king Aistulf. Today's fortress was almost entirely rebuilt from 1563, on the orders of Duke Alfonso II d'Este.
