How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Diavolezza webcam?
The webcam is on the Diavolezza, at 2,978 m, and looks north-west: the top station of the cable car, the Berghaus with its terrace and, behind them, the ridge that climbs to Munt Pers. Use it to check snow, cloud and visibility before taking the cable car.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is the Diavolezza and how do I get there?
The Diavolezza is in the Upper Engadin, in the municipality of Pontresina (Graubünden), above the Bernina Pass road. You go up by cable car from the valley station, at about 2,100 m, on the pass road: next to it is the Rhaetian Railway stop Bernina Diavolezza, on the line from St. Moritz to Tirano.
Discover Diavolezza
The Diavolezza is a saddle at almost 3,000 metres between Munt Pers and Piz Trovat. On one side it drops to the Bernina road; on the other it looks onto the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers, with Piz Palü and Piz Bernina (4,049 m) straight ahead. The cable car climbs about 880 metres in under ten minutes.
At the Berghaus, next to the station, you can eat and sleep: for those climbing Piz Palü it is the starting point, usually before dawn. In the valley station an exhibition tells the story of the melting glaciers and of the changes in the high mountains.
In summer a marked path leads to Munt Pers: about four kilometres there and back and 240 metres of ascent, for sure-footed walkers. The climb to Sass Queder, at 3,066 metres, is shorter. Piz Trovat has two via ferratas, and with a guide you can cross the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers on foot.
On skis the season is long: usually from mid-October to early May. The glacier run down to Morteratsch starts at the station; it is described as the longest of its kind in Switzerland. See also the Bernina Pass, Lagalb, the other Engadin webcams or the map.
Did you know?
In Romansh, Diavolezza means "she-devil": the name comes from a legend, that of the "beautiful she-devil" of Munt Pers, the peak behind the station, whose own name means "lost mountain".
