Discover Morbegno
Morbegno grew up along the Bitto, the stream that runs through the old town before joining the Adda: at the end of the 12th century its people left the marshy plain of the valley floor for its banks. From 1335 it was the chief town of the Terziere Inferiore, the lower third of Valtellina, and in 2019 it was Alpine Town of the Year.
On the Adda stands the Ganda bridge: three humpbacked granite arches, the middle one the highest. It was finished on 2 October 1778 to a design by the Milanese engineer Francesco Bernardino Ferrari, after a flood had brought down the previous bridge. For centuries it was the only stable, safe crossing on the lower stretch of the Adda in Valtellina. Since 2014 it has been closed to cars: only pedestrians and bicycles cross it. Opposite the town, across the river, the Costiera dei Cech faces south and has milder temperatures than the valley floor.
From the south came the Via Priula, about 70 kilometres from Bergamo to Morbegno over the San Marco Pass, at almost 2,000 metres. Venice had it built between 1592 and 1593 to trade with Graubünden without crossing the Duchy of Milan, then under Spain, and without paying its duties. Today the traffic on the SS 38 bypasses the centre on the stretch opened in 2018, and the railway has been here since 1885.
