Good to know
To judge the snow, what counts is how high the camera is. Bormio has three cameras on the slopes: the Stelvio run seen from the Oga side, Bormio 2000 halfway up the mountain and Bormio 3000 at Cima Bianca. Between the town and the top there are almost 1,800 metres of height difference, and on mild days it can rain lower down while it snows higher up. Every image carries the time of the shot.
The other resorts have one camera each. At Santa Caterina Valfurva the bowl is cold and the snow lasts a long time. Livigno, at 1,816 metres, is among the coldest places in the Italian Alps: the camera looks at the basin between the Mottolino and Carosello 3000 slopes. At Aprica you see the slopes above the roofs of the village. In Valmalenco the camera is at Alpe Palù, at about 2,000 metres, and looks at the lake, not at the slopes: it is useful for snow up high. The Silvaplana camera shows the village at the foot of the Corvatsch.
The Stelvio has its season the other way round: on the glacier above the pass people ski in summer, as long as the road is open. The Bait da Mighel camera, at Uzza, is not on a slope: it stands on the valley floor just outside Bormio and tells you whether the snow has come all the way down. Lift opening dates change every year: here you find the usual season, for the calendar each ski area's own applies.
