How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Campodolcino (Motta) webcam?
The webcam is at Motta di Sotto, a hamlet of Campodolcino on the plateau of the ski area, at 1,726 m, and looks east: on the left a hotel and a few chalets, in the middle the meadow crossed by a gravel track and, behind, the ski slope climbing to the ridge with the pylons of the Motta chairlift. It shows at once whether there is snow at Motta.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Motta di Campodolcino and how do I get there?
Motta is a hamlet of Campodolcino, in Valle Spluga (province of Sondrio), on a plateau at about 1,725 m above the village. From Campodolcino, on the SS 36 Spluga state road, the underground Sky Express funicular climbs to it when it is running; by car you drive up from Madesimo, at some times of year only with a permit. Its pistes are part of the Madesimo ski area.
Discover Campodolcino (Motta)
Motta is Campodolcino's balcony: a plateau of meadows at about 1,725 metres, more than six hundred metres above the valley floor. The village proper lies below, along the Spluga state road, but this is where the funicular and the skiers arrive. The camera is at Motta di Sotto, the lower part of the hamlet, and looks east, where the piste climbs to the ridge.
Above the houses, on the natural balcony of the Serenissima, stands the gilded statue of Our Lady of Europe: between 13 and 14 metres tall, the work of Egidio Casagrande, it was set in place on 15 October 1957 and inaugurated the following year by the Archbishop of Milan, Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Paul VI. It was the wish of Don Luigi Re, who had founded an alpine house at Motta in 1924. Not far away, the little church of Sant'Ermagora dates from 1768.
Campodolcino appears under this name in 1186. It is a string of hamlets along the Liro stream, from Prestone to Corti, on the Spluga carriage road designed by the engineer Carlo Donegani for the Austrian government. At Corti the MuViS, the museum of the Via Spluga and the Val San Giacomo, tells the story of the valley. In winter the pistes of Motta are part of the Madesimo ski area: the picture shows whether the meadow and the piste are white.
