This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Corvatsch webcam?
The webcam shows the Corvatsch top station, at 3,303 m: the arrival of the cable car, the restaurant with its large windows and terrace, the antennas. In the background, on the left, you can see the floor of the Engadin valley towards St. Moritz. Use it to check snow, wind and visibility at altitude.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Corvatsch and how do I get there?
Corvatsch is in the Upper Engadin (Graubünden), above Silvaplana. The cable car starts from Surlej, the part of Silvaplana on the other shore of the lake, and climbs in two sections, with a change at the Murtèl middle station, to 3,303 m. Silvaplana is on the road between St. Moritz and the Maloja Pass.
Discover Corvatsch
In Romansh "Corvatsch" is the "great raven". The cable car does not reach the summit, Piz Corvatsch (3,451 m), but stops at 3,303 metres, on the ridge a little further north: it is the highest cable car station in Graubünden. When the wind blows, and up here it does, you take in the view from behind the restaurant's large windows.
From the terrace the view goes all the way round: on one side the lakes of Sils and Silvaplana, about 1,500 metres below, on the other the Bernina group. Since October 2020 the station has also housed a whisky distillery, one floor below the restaurant: at this altitude distillation takes place at a temperature about ten degrees lower than at sea level.
In winter the ski area is linked with Furtschellas, above Sils, and skiing usually lasts until the end of April; the Hahnensee run goes all the way down to St. Moritz. In summer, from the Murtèl middle station, a path soon reaches Fuorcla Surlej, the pass leading to Val Roseg; on Furtschellas the water trail makes a loop past six small mountain lakes, "lejins" in Romansh. Did you know?
Below Corvatsch, at about 2,670 metres, lies the Murtèl rock glacier, described as the most studied in the world: in 1987 the first measuring borehole in a glacier of this kind was drilled here, and the permafrost has been measured without interruption ever since.
