This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Montespluga webcam?

The webcam is at Montespluga, at 1,908 m, and turns through 360 degrees: the stone roofs of the village, the reservoir with the plain at its foot, the SS 36 state road and the border mountains. It is not on the Splügen Pass (Passo dello Spluga): the pass is about 2.5 km further up the road. It is useful for checking snow and weather before you drive up.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Montespluga and how do I get there?

Montespluga is a hamlet of Madesimo, at the head of Valle Spluga (province of Sondrio), on the SS 36 state road that climbs from Chiavenna. The Splügen Pass (about 2,115 m) is just beyond: in winter ANAS, the Italian road agency, closes it, usually between late November and early December, and reopens it between late April and May. From Switzerland you arrive from Splügen, when the pass is open.

Discover Montespluga

Montespluga is the last Italian settlement before the border: a few stone-roofed houses pressed along the SS 36 at 1,908 metres, with the old customs house and the little church of San Francesco, built in 1825. The Splügen Pass is about 2.5 kilometres further up, at roughly 2,115 metres: the camera looks at the village, not at the pass.

The carriage road was opened by the Austrians in the early 1820s, to a design by the engineer Carlo Donegani: 72 hairpins between Chiavenna and Splügen. In winter the pass closes. ANAS, which manages the state road, usually stops traffic between Montespluga and the border between late November and early December and reopens between late April and May, depending on the snow. In bad weather the stretch that climbs to the village, from Teggiate upwards, can also be closed for a time: before setting off, check the notices from ANAS and, on the Swiss side, those of the Canton of Graubünden.

The lake in front of the houses is a reservoir: when the level is low the old plain reappears, with the line of the former road. In summer the Via Spluga passes through the village, the trail from Thusis to Chiavenna along the old route over the pass; in winter, as long as the road is open as far as the houses, people come up for ski touring and snowshoeing. Did you know?

The lake at Montespluga has existed since 1931: two dams, the Cardinello and the Stuetta, flooded the plain at the foot of the village to feed the hydroelectric power station at Isola.
