Discover La Punt Chamues-ch
La Punt Chamues-ch is made up of two villages that have grown until they touch, at 1,687 metres and 13 kilometres from St. Moritz. La Punt, "the bridge", lies on the left bank of the Inn, where the Albula road comes down. Chamues-ch is on the flat ground at the mouth of Val Chamuera, whose name comes from the chamois. Until 1943 the official name was the Italian one: Ponte-Campovasto.
The pass made the village's fortune. In 1865 the carriage road over the Albula was opened, and for almost forty years the traffic of goods and travellers brought work to the village, until the Albula railway went into service in 1903. The line that runs down towards Scuol, with the village station, dates from 1913. From the 17th century the Albertini family built its mansions in La Punt; the Chesa Merleda, from the same century, is still standing.
In Chamues-ch the church of San Andrea, recorded since 1370, was rebuilt in 1505 by Bernardo da Poschiavo; the Baroque church in La Punt dates from 1680. The village suffered floods in 1566, 1772 and 1843 and a fire in 1803. Today the valley floor has a cross-country ski trail in winter, and in the warm season an eleven-kilometre route for inline skates and bicycles leads to S-chanf.
