This webcam, in brief
How the camera works and what to expect from the images.
What can I see on the Domaso webcam?
The webcam is on the shore at Domaso, east of the centre, at about 200 m, and looks south-east across the upper part of Lake Como. In the foreground are the lawn and the beach, with a willow; on the far shore you see Colico, the wooded hill of Montecchio Sud and the slopes of Monte Legnone, whose summit stays out of the picture. The water off the beach shows at once whether there is wind.
Is the image live? How often does it update?
When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.
Where is Domaso and how do I get there?
Domaso is on the western shore of upper Lake Como, in the province of Como, next to Gravedona. By car you come from Menaggio along the lake, about twenty kilometres, or from Colico, which has the nearest railway station, about 15 km away. The Como-Colico bus and the boats of the Como-Colico line stop in the village.
Discover Domaso
Domaso is the wind village of the upper lake: a long beach, lawns on the shore and, as soon as the water ripples, windsurf boards, kites and sailing boats. The village lies between the mouth of the Livo stream and the flanks of Sasso Pelo, on the western shore. The camera is on the shore east of the centre and looks across the lake, where Monte Legnone rises.
The old centre grew along the Via Regina, the Roman road that ran up the western shore towards Chiavenna: the houses have stone doorways, coats of arms and votive frescoes. Villa Camilla, built in the 17th century for the Ghezzi family and facing the lake, is now the town hall; camellias grow in its park. Domaso also makes wine.
The picture shows what you need to know before loading the board: whether the wind has come in, how choppy the water is, whether there are clouds on Legnone. Opposite you can make out the houses of Colico and, to the right, the hill of Montecchio Sud. Did you know?
On Lake Como the wind keeps to a timetable: the Tivano blows from the north in the early morning, the Breva comes up from the south in the afternoon, mostly in the warmer months. It is the Breva that brings windsurfers and kiters to Domaso.
