This webcam, in brief

How the camera works and what to expect from the images.

What can I see on the Solda webcam?

The webcam is at the Kanzel (Pulpito), at 2,350 m, at the top station of the lift that comes up from the village, and turns through 360 degrees: opposite, the Ortler (3,905 m) and the neighbouring peaks with their glaciers; below, the valley floor with the houses of Solda. It is useful for checking snow and visibility before you go up.

Is the image live? How often does it update?

When the camera is running, the image updates automatically every few minutes during daylight hours. The time of the latest snapshot is shown on the page, and the timelapse plays back the hours before.

Where is Solda and how do I get there?

Solda (Sulden in German) is a hamlet of Stelvio, in Val Venosta (Vinschgau), South Tyrol, at about 1,900 m, at the head of the valley of the same name. By car you drive up from Prato allo Stelvio along the Stelvio road as far as Gomagoi, then take the SS 622 state road to the village. A scheduled bus runs up from Spondigna (Spondinig) station, on the Val Venosta railway.

Discover Solda

The Kanzel, Pulpito in Italian, is a terrace at 2,350 metres on the side of the Solda valley, about 450 metres above the village: a lift comes up to it from the houses, and the camera stands at the top station. On the other side of the valley rises the Ortler, 3,905 metres, the highest peak in South Tyrol, with Monte Zebrù and the Königspitze (Gran Zebrù) beside it.

Until the 19th century Solda was a place cut off from the world: in 1802 an Innsbruck newspaper called it "the Siberia of Tyrol", where farmers eat with the bears. Then the mountaineers arrived. Between 1865 and 1868 Julius Payer explored and mapped the Ortler group; in 1893 the Sulden-Hotel opened, along with the carriage road championed by Theodor Christomannos.

Today Solda lives off the mountains all year round. In winter you ski from 1,900 to 3,250 metres, on some forty kilometres of pistes; in summer people set off for the mountain huts and visit Messner's museum devoted to ice, built underground and opened in 2004. From the Kanzel the picture shows whether the Ortler is clear of cloud and how far down the snow has come. In 1985 Reinhold Messner brought some Tibetan yaks to Solda: ever since, at the end of June, the herd has gone up to the Madritsch pastures, returning to the valley at the end of August.
